Overview Content Server storage providers enable administrators to extend storage capabilities beyond basic internal and external configurations. By adding or configuring providers—such as external folders, databases, or Archive Center—you gain granular control over where files and content are stored.
For instance, you can define rules to route media files larger than 150 MB to a dedicated drive or directory. For advanced archiving and long-term retention, Content Server supports multiple archive solutions.
Configuration and ManagementThe default storage provider is established during initial installation. However, administrators can expand storage options via the Configure Storage Providers page, which allows:
• Adding external storage locations
• Defining rules to direct uploaded documents to specific storage devices
This configuration helps optimize system performance by ensuring configuration objects are stored internally, while enabling reuse of production data in test environments.
Accessing the Configuration PageTo locate the Configure Storage Providers page:
1. Open the Admin Pages
2. Search for “Stor”
3. Scroll down and select Configure Storage Providers
From here, you can:
• Add a new storage provider via the Add Item dropdown
• Define provider name (max 64 characters; 32 recommended for UI display)
• Set the configuration path (max 255 characters)
Example:
To store PDFs in an external directory , create a provider named “Reiners PDFs” and configure the path accordingly.
After saving changes, restart Content Server to apply the configuration.
Storage Provider RulesStorage rules determine which provider stores a given item based on attributes such as:
• File size
• MIME type
• Category name
• Node attributes
• Classification
• Security clearance
• Creation/modification date
Each Content Server instance includes default rules, such as routing zero-byte files to the ZeroByte provider. Rules can be added via the Configure Storage Rules page, accessible from the Admin interface.
Auditing and VisibilityAdministrators can audit content movement between providers. The Provider Changed audit interest (disabled by default) logs:
• Original and new storage provider names
• User who initiated the move
Each document displays its storage provider on the Versions tab. Users with appropriate privileges can view all storage rules and their associated providers.
